UPM × Ingredion × Paramelt: Grease-resistant, heat-sealable paper packaging developed to help replace fossil-based materials

UPM Specialty Materials, Ingredion and Paramelt developed a fiber-based food packaging solution for demanding applications, including bakery, fast food, convenience foods, and grab-and-go formats.

UPM Specialty Materials, Ingredion and Paramelt explore starch-based barriers for paper packaging

  • Developed and innovated together by UPM, Ingredion and Paramelt.
  • Combines UPM Specialty Materials’ paper substrates with Ingredion’s plant-based starch barrier coatings and Paramelt’s heat-seal coatings.
  • Meets the sealing requirements of modern packaging lines and converters, with a wide seal window.
  • Delivers excellent grease resistance using plant-based coating technology.
  • Works with existing coating, converting, and packaging equipment.
  • Has passed the Western Michigan University SBS-E Part 1 test for recyclability.
  • Continues to be developed further.

Bringing expertise together through co-creation

Food brands and converters are under pressure to meet evolving packaging regulations and improve recyclability, without compromising product protection, manufacturing efficiency, or cost.

Meeting these demands required expertise no single company holds alone: paper engineering, barrier coating formulation, and heat-seal technology. By bringing together UPM Specialty Materials, Ingredion, and Paramelt, the partners combined these capabilities to answer one question: can food packaging deliver this level of performance on a paper-based structure?
